National parks

mt Durmitor with Tara river canyon - spreads across 39 000 ha, and since 1980 it has been included in the UNESCO. Žabljak, the town with the greatest height above the sea level in the Balkanns (1456 m) is surrounded by 23 mountain peaks over 2300 m high and 17 glacier lakes called "mountain eyes". Durmitor is also a famous winter ski center.

mt Lovćen - spreads across 6400 ha. The mausoleum of the biggest Montenegrin ruler and poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš, is situated on the peak called the lake Crest (Jezerski vrh). 461 steps lead to this impressive construction, opened in 1974. The colourful slopes of this mountain are just perfect for nordic skiing, trekking and popular alpinism tours.

Biograd's hill (Biogradska gora) - spears across 5400 ha. In 1872 king Nikola Petrović protected it by the law due to its great ecological potential. This is one of the last three primeval rain forest in Europe- 80% of this park is under forest, and some name, Biogradsko, is characterized by 26 plant eco systems and extremly rich flora and fauna world.

Lake Scutari (Skadar) -spreads across 40 000 ha and represents the biggest cryptodepression in the Balkans. It also forms the natural border with Albania - 2/3 of the lake belong to Montenegro and 1/3 belongs to Albania. The surface of the Lake can vary between 370 and 530 sqk depending on the level of the water. A part from being the last European sanctuary for the Nesit pelicans, the Lake is also a home for 270 species of birds , 30 species of plants and 50 species of fish; there for representing a true paradise for ornithologists and nature lovers.The Lake is also a specific cultural and historical monument with is 50 islands, remains of old fortresses , churches and monasteries. In 1996, by RAMSAR CONVENTION ON WETLANDS, the Lake Skadar was included in the "Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance"
